A Wyre Forest councillor has expressed her discontent at West Mercia Police's new non-emergency line, which charges home phone users for reporting crimes.
The line has been introduced across England and Wales in an attempt to make it easier for people to inform the authorities about crimes that do not necessitate an urgent response.
Speaking to the Kidderminster Shuttle, Howard Martin, parliamentary spokesman for the Labour Group on Wyre Forest District Council, said: "The point is to encourage people to use a quick service to get in touch with the police but they are being surcharged for being community spirited."
Mr Martin described the charges as appalling penny pinching, claiming that the service should be free or have a minimal charge.
Last month, home phone customers subscribed to BT saw a price increase, as the provider raised the monthly bills of its Anytime Call Plan by 20p to £4.90.
