Fixed lines can prove to be a valuable asset to children who are severely affected by their parents' drink and drug abuse problems.
It has been recently revealed by the NSPCC that every week more than 100 children contact ChildLine, a helpline dedicated to youngsters.
Two-thirds of children who call into the helpline number often express concerns over their parents' drinking habits, the organisation pointed out.
Of these children, 20 per cent mentioned violence in the family while ten per cent confirmed incidents of sexual abuse.
Sue Minto, head of ChildLine, said: "The fallout from parental drug and alcohol abuse is a ticking time bomb in many children's lives.
"It's vital these children are helped before lasting damage occurs."
However, she pointed out that the situation needs delicate handling as most of these affected children also tend to be overly protective of their parents and can go to great measures to ensure that they are not harmed in anyway.
