Fixed line services are likely to be in use for many years to come even though new innovations in telephony are being made almost everyday.
The latest such innovation was the launch of a new voice application service by search engine giant Google.
In an article published on the Guardian, Matt Warman considered whether this could usher in an age when people would stop having multiple phone numbers.
Google's net telephony service could be a step in the direction of providing a single communication solution.
However, Mr Warman added: "Realistically, of course, the day when the landline, mobile and computer are all completely united is some way off."
His comments follow in the wake of recent findings published by the NSPCC which revealed that children were increasingly relying on the home phone to seek out help when tormented by their parents' alcohol and drug problems.
