Landline alternative calling system trial launched in South Africa
Tuesday, Aug 31, 2010 Filed Under :Home phone news
Home phone customers in South Africa are being given the chance to trial a new alternative to landline services.
Openweb has launched a Free Calls Beta service that will run until September 5th, offering free calls to other landlines in over 60 countries via a Skype service.
Part of an email newsletter published by My Broadband suggests that the trial will limit the number of channels available to customers.
The statement also reveals that the trial version will not necessarily be very reliable.
It said: "Because, naturally, demand will be high, you will not necessarily be able to connect to the system on first try.
"However, if you cannot connect to our system, simply try again later, as it will work on a first come first serve basis."
Landline services still remain a competitively fought playing field in the UK, with the market still not succumbing to pressure of online Skype and voice over internet protocol alternatives.
BT recently announced plans to significantly reduce the cost of its standard landline installation, cutting it to £29.99 from £127.99.
