Google has extended the bouquet of free services offered to its clients with a new net telephony service that can be used from within Gmail itself.
Now users can make free calls within the US and Canada at least until the end of this year.
It is still too early to say how this service would impact landline use and net telephony services such as voice over internet protocol (Voip).
Google's business model aims to raise funds from international calls made using its service. However, the company has announced that rates would be variable and dependent on its rates chart.
As a means to promote the new telephony service, Google will be setting up red phone booths at university campuses as well as airport terminals.
Callers will be able to use these booths to make calls free of charge within the US and Canada as well as calls to other countries at a relatively low cost.
