Residents in Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch will soon have to input their 01202 area code when making calls on their home phone devices.
Ofcom has announced the move, proposing that the change is enforced from November 1st 2012. The decision has been made in an effort to protect the future supply of landline numbers in the Bournemouth region.
New landline numbers will help to allow consumers and companies to take advantage of the widest choice of telecoms providers.
Ofcom has also stated that similar action may be taken elsewhere in the UK, with Aberdeen, Brighton and Hove, Bradford and Middlesbrough among the places where people may soon have to dial their full area code.
The watchdog's action comes after it set new prices for the amount of money that BT Openreach can charge communications providers which use its wholesale telecoms technology.
As part of the move, the yearly cost of wholesale line rental from the provider will drop from £106.68 to £98.91.
