UK 17th in European broadband league
Wednesday, Feb 01, 2012 Filed Under :Broadband News
Britain's broadband packages are the 17th fastest in Europe, research shows, meaning that the country is far behind its aim of offering the quickest connections in the continent. Akamai's latest State of the Internet report's data illustrates that the UK's average speed is 5.1Mbps, which is substantially lower than the Netherlands, where the average speed is 8.5Mbps, according to V3. Speaking to the news provider, David Belson, director of market intelligence at Akamai, said: "Lots of governments have put funding forward but it will take time for that funding to manifest itself into the actual rollout of fibre in ducts and on poles. This should start to have an impact in the coming years." Although Britain's position in the research does not breed confidence for the government's plans to have Europe's fastest broadband, many authorities have made efforts to improve their connections. One of these is the North Yorkshire Council, which has announced a new extension project that will bring high-speed broadband to residents in Rosedale.
