Tellies may become more popular for broadband use
Friday, Jul 30, 2010 Filed Under :Broadband News
Broadband bundles could soon make it possible for consumers to access the internet through their television sets.
The popularity of internet-enabled tellies has surpassed that of three-dimensional TV sets, according to latest findings made public by iSuppli Corp.
Global shipments for the TVs, which are designed for internet use, are set to rise to 27.7 million units in 2010. On the other hand, 3-D enabled televisions will only reach 4.2 million, according to forecasts made by the web analytics company.
Riddhi Patel, director and principal analyst for television systems at iSuppli, said that although 3-D televisions have been promoted aggressively and also benefitted from mainstream blockbusters, the uptake is still lower than internet-enabled TV (IETV).
"This is because 3-D is still dealing with a number of barriers, including cost, content availability and interoperability, while IETV provides immediate benefits by allowing TV viewers to access a range of content readily available on the internet," she added.
