London mobile broadband slower than other large UK cities, research shows
Wednesday, Feb 01, 2012 Filed Under :Broadband News
London has slower broadband packages than any of the UK's other large cities, a report has discovered. The city finished in 23rd place out of 30 locations, offering the average speeds of 2.71Mbps, while Portsmouth was found to offer the fastest average speed of 3.46Mbps, according to a study by uSwitch. It was found that 29 per cent of the research's respondents were unhappy with their current speeds, with 47 per cent describing them as slow. Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch, said: "Across large swathes of the UK, and worryingly in some of the country’s most populated towns and cities, 3G connections are simply not consistent enough at the moment, with too many users experiencing drop-offs and blackspots." uSwitch's research comes after Ofcom announced plans to extend the UK's 4G coverage as a result of demand for mobile broadband services. The watchdog has set out proposals to extend accessibility to a minimum of 98 per cent of Britain.
