Lancashire to give 97% access to superfast broadband by 2014
Monday, Jan 30, 2012 Filed Under :Broadband News
Around 97 per cent of residents and businesses in Lancashire will be able to access superfast broadband by 2014.
Lancashire County Council announced that a deal has been struck with BT to act as a delivery partner, with the roll-out benefitting from £32 million of public sector investment.
This will come in the form of £10.8 million from Broadband Delivery UK, £16.5 million from the European Regional Development Fund, and £4.7 million from the local authority.
Furthermore, a £3 million fund will be set up which will help small to medium sized enterprises get the most out of the technology.
Last week, thousands of residents in East Lancashire gained access to faster broadband, with speeds of up to 20Mbps being made available.
Geoff Driver, leader of Lancashire County Council, said: "We are determined to ensure that Lancashire continues to benefit from being at the forefront of this technology. Establishing this superfast broadband network will not only open up opportunities for businesses in Lancashire, it will revolutionise the way that people in the county, especially in rural or deprived areas, connect to the wider world."
