Cambridgeshire and Peterborough take next step towards superfast broadband
Monday, Apr 30, 2012 Filed Under :Broadband News
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have taken the next steps in securing superfast broadband for the majority of households and businesses.
The Fenland Citizen reported that an official contract notice has now been posted by the county council and suppliers of next-generation broadband infrastructure are now being invited to register their interest.
It is hoped that a company will be appointed by the end of the year and work will start at the beginning of 2013.
Superfast broadband will bring a host of benefits to the region, boosting the economy and allowing communities to access speeds of at least 25Mbps.
Cambridge has also been at the forefront of trialling 4G, with speeds reaching up to 50Mbps.
The service is being provided by Cambridge Broadband Networks Vectastar microwave, which could have the potential to revolutionise cloud-based services for businesses.
It comes after O2 launched the first 4G network in London in December last year, allowing mobile phone and tablet users to get online at superfast speeds.
