Burnham homeowners encouraged to join broadband campaign
Thursday, Feb 02, 2012 Filed Under :Broadband News
Burnham residents and businesses have been called upon to help Connecting Devon and Somerset with its plans for superfast broadband to be made available in the region.
The initiative is a partnership between councils in Somerset, Devon, North Somerset, Plymouth and Torbay, and hopes to provide 100 per cent broadband coverage of 2Mbps by 2015, though it needs locals to complete a survey regarding the speed of their broadband packages.
Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, councillor David Hall, Somerset County Council's cabinet member for strategic planning and economic development, said: "We need everyone to get behind us on this. Although we have up to £51 million already, we must secure further investment from the private sector."
Mr Hall's comments come after the Evening Gazette reported that broadband specialist NextGenus has expressed interest in improving internet connections in East Cleveland.
The not-for-profit company will help to guarantee that speeds are boosted, as long as a satisfactory number of people sign up for the services.
