British consumers are now using broadband packages that are 22 per cent faster than a year ago, a study has found.
The average UK residential broadband speed stood at 7.6Mbps in November 2011, representing an increase from the 6.2Mbps figure recorded in November/December 2010, according to research from consumer watchdog Ofcom.
Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said: "There is a real opportunity for consumers to look at the packages and deals in their area in order to receive the best value, speeds and performance available to them."
Mr Richards also stated that it is encouraging to see the increase in speeds and the different choices that broadband subscribers now have.
One area in particular that is set to see improvements in its internet speeds is Lancashire, where roughly 97 per cent of residents and businesses are set to benefit from superfast broadband by 2014.
The roll-out of the technology will be helped by £32 million of public sector investment.
